What Is A Doula? Do I Need One?

When I tell people. “Hey, I own a doula agency.” The first thing most people say is… What is a doula?

So I thought, this would be the best question to answer to start my blog.

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning ” a woman who serves.” In today’s time, a doula refers to a professionally trained person who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to women throughout their pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

The second most asked question is:

Do I need a doula?

And I always answer it with:

Only you know what you need. No one can answer this question for you. You are more than capable of having a baby without a doula, as well as taking care of your baby through the postpartum period. However, the better question would be is a doula beneficial for you and your family?

A doula can be beneficial if you:

Have lack of support

Anxiety surrounding birth, or postpartum

Need help advocating for yourself

Need assistance during birth and postpartum

Need someone to be a sounding board etc.

At Love & Light Doula Agency we strive to meet our clients where they are at. Whatever support you need throughout this transformative time, we are able to help. We offer birth, postpartum and fertility doula services.

Give us a call and we would be willing to answer any questions you may have at no cost.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
